140 East 13th Street | Block : 558 | Lot #27
Description & Building Alterations
This three-story Greek Revival row house was built between 1837 and 1839 for Ebenezer Pray. In 1836 the lot was vacant, owned by Moulton Bullock, and valued at $3,000. Three years later, in 1839, the lot had a house, valued at $3,800 and owned by Ebenezer Pray. Pray was listed as living at the corner of 13th Street and 3rd Avenue in the 1837-1838 City Directory, suggesting that this house had already been built by 1838.
In 1907, the stoop was removed, the parlor floor entrance was converted to a window, and access to the building was moved to the basement level. Its original stoop entry would have looked like the one at No. 138. At this time, this residence was converted to a hotel. It later became a multi-family dwelling in 1939.
