102 East 10th Street | Block : 465 | Lot #9
Description & Building Alterations
Part of Peter Gerard Stuyvesant’s portion of the Stuyvesant family estate, this lot was assessed for the construction of a small house in 1839. Peter Gerard Stuyvesant was the son of Peter Stuyvesant, Director General of the West Indian Company in New Netherlands.
Peter Gerard’s real estate manager, Thomas McFarlan, and his family lived in the house by 1851. McFarlan also had an office in the adjacent building on the lot, 104 East 10th. The simple house evokes the Greek Revival style, and has seen a number of alterations over the years, including the addition of the third floor in 1858, a new Neo-Grec style cornice to match new construction next door in 1879, and the installation of a handsome Greek Revival style door surround in the mid-1960s.
In 1984, this house and Number 104 were designated as part of the St. Mark’s Historic District Extension, largely because of the aesthetic influence they had on the development of the remainder of the block. More information is available in the Landmarks Preservation Commission’s report.
