Description & Building Alterations

This building was built between 1838 and 1839 as a stable. The simple two story structure features a painted brick facade, wooden shutters on the second story, and a simple cornice. The center opening on the first floor appears to have changed when compared to historic photos. In 1953 sculptor Charles Salerno occupied an apartment on the second floor of this building. Born in 1916, Salerno primarily worked in marble and was known for abstract figurative sculptures.  He taught art in Washington Irving High School and the National Academy of Design.
