Description & Building Alterations

This seven-story old law tenement was designed in 1899 by Charles B. Meyers and housed 27 families over ground-floor shops. It looks like a new law tenement on account of its width and neo-Renaissance appearance. The red brick building, exhibiting classical devices rendered in terra-cotta, features stone surrounds on the middle four windows of the Second Avenue facade and smaller arched windows on the facade at E 9th Street. Other architectural features include quoins, arched windows at the seventh story, stone lintels and arched pediments above the windows, and stone belt courses at the first story.

The architect designed other notable buildings such as the Department of Health Building at 125 Worth Street, Congregation Ohab Zedek at 118 West 95th Street, Congregation Rodeph Sholom at 7 West 83rd Street, the Main Building of Yeshiva University at 2540 Amsterdam Avenue, and the Criminal Courts Building at 100 Centre Street.
