  • Original Use : Residential/Commercial
  • Original Owner : E.L. Winthrop
  • Original Architect : Boekell & Son

Description & Building Alterations

This lot holds two old law tenements built in 1893 and designed by Boekell & Son, which replaced three row houses. The buildings were designed in the Neo-Grec style with incised window lintels, terra cotta beltcourses, and a pressed-metal cornice. In 1957 the ground-floor stores were converted to apartments.

In 1974 a vacate order was posted for the 168 East 2nd Street. At that point the building had 25 apartments, but only five of them were rented. Unlike many of the buildings that were in a similar, unlivable condition, this one and its partner were saved from demolition and rehabilitated.
