254-6 East 7th Street | Block : 376 | Lot #19
Description & Building Alterations
In 1899 this six story tenement building was erected to house twenty-six families.
Costing $25,000 to build, owner Michael Hanlon of 122 Bowery employed the services of architects Norenburger & Straub. In 1942 a permit was filed to erect a banner on the building in honor of troops serving in World War II. By 1973 the building was fated to be vacated as determined by an inspector’s report that indicated that only two of the apartments were occupied and the building had no heat or hot water, vacant apartments had been vandalized, public halls were lined with trash, and water leaked into the building in an apartment where the ceiling had fallen in among other signs of deterioration. Despite this the building has retained its handsome ornamentation and architectural details including an arched entryway, terra cotta panels and banding, granite colonettes and stoop.
